ARTIST STATEMENT
When creating my pieces, I strive to make them look as realistic and as genuine as I possibly can. My main interest has been creating portraits and I’ve enjoyed doing that the most for a long time now. I’ve always been a very observant person, and I’ve also always had a kind of fascination with people and stories. I think portraits help me express that fascination. A face or especially eyes can tell a story all on its own. I always hope that people see more than a drawing, painting, or print of a person when they view my work. There’s something I want viewers of my artwork to see and that is the depth, emotion, and story of the person I’m portraying in my pieces.
Not only with portraits but with other works, I like to use a reference, usually a subject that exists in front of me but it could also be an image. I like to play with line and composition a lot. Shading is something I try to put great effort in because light or dark can depict a certain mood and it’s also important in observational pieces where I can view where the light hits the object so I can show the most successful amount of contrast. I tend to keep things grayscale but I do love to work with color as well. When it comes to mediums, my first love was drawing with graphite and that continues to be my favorite but I love to paint, and I’ve taken a great liking to printmaking and etching as well.
